All you need to know about Women’s Day 2022

March 8th is approaching, an important date in the history of our society and which we continue to commemorate more strongly every day. Check this blog post to learn more details and get inspired!

You may be wondering, who invented Women's Day or what happened on March 8th?  Well, if you don't know the story yet, here is a little summary.

It all started with a tragedy that provoked a reaction. In 1911, the Triangle Shirtwaist shirt factory in New York burned down, killing more than 140 women who worked in the factory. As a result of this tragedy, women began to demonstrate for better labor rights. This and other important historical milestones such as the suffragette movement are the reasons why every March 8th is commemorated as International Women's Day.

These are some of the important women in history who greatly contributed to many aspects of our society, in science, art, politics and activism.

  • Marie Courie: the discoverer of chemical elements such as Polonium and Radium, she was the first woman to become a professor at the University of Paris and the first to win the Nobel Prize for her research.
  • Frida Kahlo: One of the most influential Mexican artists of the 20th century due to her constant push to be different, break stereotypes and be open about her sexual orientation. Although her relationship with Diego Rivera is questioned today, she managed to break down many stereotypes.
  • Valentina Tereshkova: The first woman in history to travel alone in space, aboard the Vostok 6 in 1963 as part of a study to test the physical condition of women in space. She graduated as a space engineer and held several political positions during the Soviet Union.
  • Coco Chanel: During the First World War, she was the first designer to adapt men's clothes for women. Before this, pants were seen as a clothing item reserved only for men. Thanks, Coco!
  • Benazir Bhutto: First woman to be elected Prime Minister of a Muslim country. This news made headlines worldwide when she won the 1988 elections in Pakistan.
  • Greta Thunberg: You probably know her, as she is from this era and an activist fighting against climate change. We could not leave her unmentioned as she is an inspiring source for elwin as a brand and teaches us that all women can do it regardless of our age and origin.

These are some of the female role models that we should be proud of and get inspired by their achievements.

What does the color purple mean?

You have probably noticed that on March 8th, everything is purple, and this also has an explanation. It all started with the women who suffered the tragedy in the New York shirt factory: this is when purple gained a symbolic meaning for feminism and women's rights. The story says that the smoke coming out of the factory had purple tones. Also, this color was adopted by the suffragettes in England to represent their mobilization.

What are women's rights?

"Women's rights are the fundamental human rights that were enshrined by the United Nations for every human being on the planet nearly 70 years ago. These rights include the right to live free from violence, slavery, and discrimination; to be educated; to own property; to vote, and to earn a fair and equal wage." (Source. Global Fund For Women)

We understand that explaining all the history and current issues of women's day would require a much longer article, and we are just scratching the surface. We tried to summarize some important points to help you be better informed about what happens on this day and why it is commemorated worldwide. We believe that both elwin and the rest of the brands should speak out and talk to their audience on this day.
